Associate Professor of Theology & Assistant Director, Centre for Catholic Studies, Durham University
Marcus is an Associate Professor of Theology and Assistant Director of the Centre for Catholic Studies at Durham University.
His research sits at the intersection of theology, psychoanalysis, and continental philosophy, with a focus on trauma studies and safeguarding.
Marcus takes a practical (ethnographic) approach to cases of abuse within religious institutions, exploring how theology can contribute to safeguarding and survivor care. His published work includes Theology After Lacan and Žižek: A (Very) Critical Introduction, and he actively contributes to discussions on theological responses to trauma.
His most recent project, Boundary Breaking: The Cross of the Moment, is a major research initiative exploring the theological dimensions of safeguarding failures. The report offers insights on trauma, healing, and institutional responsibility, fostering deeper engagement with survivor experiences.
Marcus also supervises postgraduate students in theology, social theory, and philosophy. He is actively involved in receptive ecumenism, promoting dialogue across Christian traditions.
